What Are GMOs?

GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) refers to any organism that has had its genetic makeup changed deliberately by humans. As used by opponents it refers specifically to organisms changed using biotechnology to insert genes from another organism, but excluding those changed by more traditional, so-called "natural" methods. The difference is illustrated in the pictures below.

But experts such as the the National Research Council Committee on Scientific Evaluation of the Introduction of Genetically Modified Microorganisms and Plants into the Environment have long agreed that the METHOD of making the change is irrelevant to the safety of the final product. It is that final PRODUCT that must be tested to see if it is safe, no matter how it is made.
